There is hope

You notice some spotting and you’ve already gone through menopause.

The pain and discomfort in your pelvic area has become more annoying and suspicious.

You feel constant bloating or start to question why so many trips to the bathroom.

If you have experienced any of these, ask your primary health care provider for a pelvic and rectal exam immediately. If a biopsy takes place and cancer is detected in any of your female reproductive organs, for your best outcome, get to a gynecologic oncologist. Our gynecologic oncology team is ready to meet you and work with your primary doctor. Working together to give you the best chance for survival.

Why Be Treated at Nebraska Medicine for Gynecological Cancers

We Offer a Team of Women's Cancer Specialists Near You

In addition to their two Omaha locations, the gynecologic oncology team regularly offers services in Atlantic, Iowa; Lincoln, Nebraska; and York, Nebraska. To speak directly with our gynecologic oncology (women's cancer specialists) team, please call 402.559.5068.

Expertise

Our gynecological oncologists have training in obstetrics and gynecology. This is followed by two to four years of specialized training in the treatment of gynecologic cancers including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and experimental treatments, as well as the biology and pathology of gynecologic cancer. This additional training provides our specialists with the knowledge and experience needed to provide you with the most effective treatment plans and successful outcomes.

The Most Advanced Treatments

Gynecologic cancers generally involve very complex, difficult surgeries. Statistics show that patients treated by gynecological oncologists have the highest survival rates. Because gynecological oncologists perform these surgeries regularly, they know and use the latest techniques in order to provide you with the best results. All patients undergoing cancer treatment with Nebraska Medicine have access to our Infusion Center at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, which serves as a treatment center and urgent-care-type facility for those battling cancer.

Leaders in Robotic Surgery

Our specialists are leaders in robotic surgery for the diagnosis and treatment of gynecological cancers. Robotic surgery combines robotics and computer-enhanced technology. This arms our surgeons with a greater degree of accuracy and precision. It also allows surgeons to perform more complex procedures than were possible through traditional laparoscopy (minimally invasive surgery). Robotic surgery also minimizes pain and discomfort, reduces recovery time greatly and decreases the risk for complications. Patients can go home the day after surgery.

We Write the Guidelines Other Doctors Use

We are a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) committee. This group writes national guidelines for the treatment of cervical, ovarian and uterine cancers. Our physicians also serve on the board for the Society of Gynecological Oncology to help formulate government regulations, the Cervical Cancer Task Force as well as the state board for Every Woman Matters.

Research and Clinical Trials

Our doctors are involved in ongoing research on gynecological cancers. This close association to research gives you access to the most promising medications and therapies through clinical trials before they are available to others.

Team Approach to Care

Doctors from several disciplines collaborate and form a unique treatment plan based on the patient’s needs and condition. Our team approach to care includes consulting with medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, internal medicine specialists, case managers, oncology certified nurses, pharmacists, social workers, nutritionists and rehabilitation specialists to develop a plan of care that has the input of multiple specialists. The team will follow your case through your treatment regimen, discuss, collaborate and make needed adjustments based on the consensus of the group.

They address:

  • Quality-of-life issues
  • Body image and femininity
  • Emotional support
