Nebraska Medicine offers a range of additional support programs, including diabetes management through Virta, maternity care with UMR, smoking cessation resources, digital physical therapy via SWORD Health and weight management options.
Support for a healthy pregnancy
The UMR Maternity CARE program is designed to support you from pre-pregnancy through childbirth and beyond, helping you achieve a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. This program is available for people enrolled in a Nebraska Medicine medical plan.
Pre-pregnancy guidance:
- Understand and manage your health risks before becoming pregnant.
Ongoing support:
- Personalized phone calls from experienced nurses each trimester and after your baby is born.
- Pre-birth education and follow-up calls, with referrals to case management if needed.
High-risk monitoring:
- If identified as high-risk, receive additional support from a nurse case manager who will help manage your condition.

Treat muscle, joint and pelvic pain through virtual physical therapy
Available to colleagues enrolled in a medical plan after Jan. 1, 2025.
Nebraska Medicine employees can access three new digital physical therapy programs through Sword Health. These virtual offerings are designed to address various needs and are fully covered at no cost to you.
Who can enroll:
- Employees, spouses and dependents enrolled in a Nebraska Medicine medical plan.
- Thrive or Move: Dependents must be 13 or older.
- Bloom: For females 18 or older.
Manage and overcome joint, back, or muscle pain with a personalized physical therapy program. Work with a licensed doctor of physical therapy, complete your sessions using a provided tablet and receive real-time feedback from the comfort of your home. Learn more.
Address pelvic pain, bladder leakage, bowel dysfunction and more with the guidance of a pelvic health specialist from the privacy of your home. It is designed for women at all life stages, including pregnancy, postpartum and menopause. Learn more.

Prevent and manage diabetes
Virta Health offers an online clinic designed to help people with Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes reverse their condition through personalized nutrition and coaching. The program is fully covered by Nebraska Medicine, valued at over $3,000.
Who can enroll:
- Nebraska Medicine employees, spouses and adult dependents aged 18+ enrolled in a Nebraska Medicine medical plan.
- Available to those with Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes.
Personalized care:
- Tailored nutrition plans and 1:1 health coaching.
- Daily support through the Virta app.
Health improvements:
- Average weight loss of 30 pounds for members in the first year.
- Better sleep, reduced medication needs and increased energy.
Comprehensive support:
- Unlimited health coaching.
- Free diabetes testing supplies are delivered to your door.
- Doctor-driven support and on-demand resources, including recipes, meal plans and grocery lists.
Virta teaches you how to change your diet so that your body burns fat for energy.
- Change what you eat, not how much you eat.
- By changing what you eat, you can reduce your blood sugar levels and need for medication.
- Virta fully supports those who want to exercise, but it is not required to achieve diabetes reversal.

Comprehensive smoking cessation support
Take the first step towards a smoke-free life with our comprehensive support and resources. Our Smoking Cessation Program is designed to help Nebraska Medicine colleagues, spouses and dependents stop smoking and improve their overall health.
This free program is offered to all Nebraska Medicine colleagues, spouses and dependents.
- Access to one-on-one and group counseling sessions through the Outpatient Pharmacy at Durham Outpatient Center.
- Counseling combined with quit aids to support your journey to quit smoking.
- Up to $250 reimbursement for FDA-approved nicotine replacement products with certificate of completion and receipts.

Nebraska Medicine colleagues, spouses and dependents enrolled in a medical plan have access to nicotine cessation coverage.
- Nicotine cessation services and therapy are covered for enrolled members.
- Up to eight visits with a primary care physician are covered as a preventive benefit.
- Coverage for prescription and over-the-counter nicotine cessation products (e.g., Chantix®, Nicoderm ® CQ, Zyban ®, Nicorette ® gum).
Tools to help you lose weight
Achieve your weight-loss goals with the New Direction nonsurgical weight-loss program. Employees and spouses covered under a Nebraska Medicine medical plan can take advantage of exclusive discounts and financial support.

- Medical monitoring: Includes lab work and regular visits with a health care provider.
- Customizable meal plans: Choose between two meal plans to meet your needs.
- A low-calorie diet for gradual, steady weight loss. This typically includes bars and shakes for two of three meals a day.
- A very low-calorie diet for intense, rapid weight loss. It's a complete vacation from food, so you can set aside worrying about cooking food for yourself while you learn the mental game of eating to optimize your health.
- Meal replacements: Enjoy a variety of high-protein shakes, puddings, soups and bars, providing 100% of your daily vitamin and mineral needs. The cost of the meals averages between $63 to $100 per week, depending on the program and a person's specific plan.
- Supportive education: Weekly group sessions focus on nutrition, exercise and behavior changes, with regular weight and blood pressure monitoring.
- Reduced start-up fee: Employees and spouses pay only $75 to join the program, compared to the usual $150 fee.
- 10% discount on meal products: Receive 10% off all meal replacement products, with the option to use HSA or FSA funds for purchases.
- $250 reimbursement: After completing the program and reaching your goal weight, you can receive up to $250 per year for meal replacement products. Submit your certificate of completion to the HR Service Center to qualify.
