Disability insurance options

We understand that unexpected illness or injury can disrupt your life and career. To support you, we offer two disability insurance options: Basic (employer-paid) and Supplemental. These plans provide financial protection to help you focus on your recovery when you need it most.

Basic Short- and Long-Term Disability (100% employer-paid)

Nebraska Medicine provides company-paid disability plans through Reliance Standard to support eligible employees by replacing a portion of their income if they cannot work. Full-time employees receive both Short-Term and Long-Term Disability, while part-time employees receive Short-Term Disability.

Provides coverage for short-term, nonwork-related injuries or illnesses. The STD benefit is paid for by Nebraska Medicine; there is no cost to you. However, the benefits received are taxable.

This benefit offers financial protection to you when you need it most – if you become disabled and can no longer work. The plan will also help you return to work, if appropriate.

Your benefit may be reduced if you receive disability benefits from retirement, Social Security, workers’ compensation, state disability insurance, no-fault benefits or return-to-work earnings. Refer to your certificate of coverage for more details.

Supplemental Long-Term Disability (100% employee-paid)

If you want additional coverage, full-time (0.9 to 1.0 FTE) and part-time (0.5 to 0.89) colleagues can choose to purchase Supplemental Long-Term Disability (LTD) insurance. This plan offers enhanced financial protection in case of disability.

  • Benefit: 66 2/3% of your basic monthly earnings*.
  • Maximum Monthly Benefit: Lesser of $15,000 or 66 2/3% of basic monthly earnings.
  • Minimum Monthly Benefit: Greater of $100 or 10% of basic monthly earnings.
  • Elimination Period: 90 calendar days of missed work due to a qualified long-term disability.

*Basic monthly earnings exclude bonuses, overtime pay or other special forms of compensation

  • Enrollment: Available when you are first eligible for benefits, with no Evidence of Insurability (EOI) required. You can apply for supplemental coverage at anytime during the year, but EOI may be required after your initial eligibility period.
  • Premiums: Paid through biweekly payroll deductions using after-tax dollars.

Coverage will begin the first month following approval.

  1. Log in to Workday.
  2. Go to the Benefits tab.
  3. Select "Change Benefits."
  4. Select "Change Supplemental Insurance Coverage" from the the drop-down.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
