Your care team may include the following members:
Medical Oncologist
Recommends medicines for treatment options, prescribes therapy to shrink tumors, eliminates cancer cells and prevents cancer from coming back. Nebraska Medicine is proud to have the largest group of medical oncologists in the region providing specialization in breast cancer treatments.
Surgical Oncologist
Performs procedures to remove known tumors. The Nebraska Medicine Cancer Network has a robust surgical oncology program offering patients unique treatment options not available elsewhere. The program offers a comprehensive approach to cancer care with fellowship-trained surgical oncologists. Our breast cancer surgeons use a variety of cosmetic techniques to remove cancer while maintaining the appearance of the breast.
Radiation Oncologist
Treats cancer with targeted radiation to kill cancer cells and prevent them from recurring. Revolutionary advances in radiation oncology have been made over the past 10 to 15 years which has resulted in improved tumor targeting and normal tissue sparing. Nebraska Medicine has the largest group of radiation oncologists in the region allowing for each physician to specialize in different types of cancer.
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon
Creates a reconstructed breast that comes as close as possible to the appearance of the natural breast. The Nebraska Medicine Cancer Network offers some of the most sophisticated breast reconstruction options to help women feel whole again following treatment. These options include mastectomy, deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap approach and oncoplastic surgery.
Genetic Counselor
Assesses risk factors including family, medical and/or personal history to determine if the cause of your cancer may be the result of an inherited gene. Genetic counselors will evaluate the need for special testing and counsel you on available tests and options.
Nurse/Nurse Navigator
Trained to help you get the most out of your treatment and assist you with any problems during the treatment and recovery process. They will connect with Support Services and coordinate your care and treatment with the rest of your health care team members. You will see and speak with nurses more than anyone else on your health care team.
Radiologist
Interprets pictures of areas inside the body. Radiologists use standard imaging to detect breast cancer, including:
- 3D mammography
- Breast ultrasound
- Breast MRI
Radiologists also find and measure tumors that appear in your scans to facilitate treatment decisions at various stages. Before you start treatment, the scans help the radiologist determine your best options. During treatment, the scans show how well medicines are working. After treatment, they show if tumors have returned.
Pathologist
Examines cells and tissue samples to help the breast care team make a diagnosis and treatment plan.
